Master musicians bring classical, jazz, choral, and folk music to life in the 2008 Absolute Music Series at the Friedman Center’s 2008 concert season. The four remaining concerts of the series will be held at 2 p.m. on March 9, April 6, May 18, and June 8 at the Friedman Center in Santa Rosa.
Now in its fifth season, the Absolute Music Series features first class professional artists playing classical and other diverse music, ranging from Klezmer to Renaissance Madrigals to Opera. It is the series’ mission to bring top-notch music at affordable prices to the Santa Rosa community.
“We want people to have an opportunity to join our intimate group of music lovers and enjoy these monthly events as we do,” said Alfred Batzdorff, the series’ co-chair.
Upcoming concert highlights include the March 9 performance of String Circle which features Joseph Edelberg, Santa Rosa Symphony’s concertmaster, cellist Thalia Moore, and Anthony Martin recognized as “the violist” by The New York Times.
The April 6 concert showcases Sonoma County’s popular River Choir directed by Sonia Tubridy, co-founder of the Coffee Concert Chamber music series. The program will include Renaissance Madrigals, Opera Arias, choral pieces, and more.
The May 18 program features the String Circle again, this time with renowned pianist and former Santa Rosa Junior College music instructor Norma Brown.
The season closes with “Music Matters” on June 8. Soprano Rebecca Plack who has appeared on such stages as the International Great Romantics Festival in Canada, Tenor Stephen Guggenheim who has sung in some of the world’s greatest opera houses and concert halls, including San Francisco Opera, and Blaise Bryski whose credits as a fortepianist include the Los Angeles Baroque Orchestra Chamber Music series, the New York Concert Singers, and the Aldeburgh Connection/CBS Radio, will present an imaginative recital series that takes a new look at old music.
Earlier season concerts included Orient Express, an ensemble of musicians specializing in Gypsy and Romani trail music and a Gypsy Trail dancer in January, and the Catskill Klezmorim in February.
The Absolute Music series is a non-profit organization. Tickets are $18, free for full time students with ID. For information, call 707-538-1899.
